Decent touring tire, slightly better gas mileage : Goodyear Assurance Fuel Max Radial Tire - 215/70R15 98TR

I really have mixed feelings about purchasing these for my 2000 Toyota Celica GTS. First, the bad stuff. Relative to performance tires I've owned in the past, these tires are *soft*. While going in a straight line this is a good thing. The ride is very smooth and quiet. However when you turn, the sidewalls turn to jello. Responsiveness and turn-in is probably the worst of any tire I have experienced. This tires makes no apologies for being a 100% comfort and efficiency oriented tire. If you enjoy any sort of spirited driving in you car, I would look elsewhere. The benefit in gas mileage just isn't worth the lack of performance - at least for me anyway. Dry traction is only slightly better than handling, which is to say not great. Under even moderately heavy acceleration or braking, I start to lose traction and the tires squeal. Again, this is probably on-par for low end passenger vehicles, but I consider these tires woefully inadequate for sporty cars.

That said, the fuel mileage did seem to tick up a bit when I got these cars. I used to average around 32MPG highway and now I usually get about 33.5MPG highway. And this is with a 10 year old car with 180k miles on it. So yes, gas mileage did seem to improve a small bit on the highway. The ride on these tires is also very smooth and very quiet. The Celica is known for being a tin box on the highway, and these tires definitely quiet it down. Also, the wear rate is fantastic on these tires. With 23k miles on them, its looking like the front could probably go 50k miles and the rears might go 80k miles. This tire also handles water very well. Hydroplaning resistance is high and I have a great deal of confidence when driving in the rain with these tires. The same could not be said for the performance tires I've owned in the past.

So overall this is a decent tire, I just wish performance were a little higher. This may or may not be an issue depending on how you drive.
